The Binc staff have returned from Chicago, IL and recovered after a jam packed week attending Book Expo America 2016. Pam, Kit, and Penny DROVE to BEA 2016 this year since the Windy City is so close to Ann Arbor (#BEAorBust), along with board member and INscribe Digital EVP Anne Kubek.
Our First In-Person Board Meeting
On Tuesday, the day before BEA 2016, the staff and board of directors met for the first in-person, all-day board meeting in Binc’s history! It was beneficial for everyone to finally meet face to face and be able to chat between sessions. Topics ranged from past accomplishments and successes to future planning and goal setting. The board voted Matthew Gildea to the role of Vice-President. Congratulations to Matthew!
And board president Lori Tucker-Sullivan surprised everyone with a cake to celebrate Binc’s 20th anniversary! Thanks Madame President!
After the meeting everyone enjoyed dinner together to wind down, leading to plenty of talking and laughter.
Drinks with Binc (party pictures)
Wednesday brought the first half-day of BEA. Binc was once again welcomed to the ABA Booksellers Lounge to meet with bookstore employees from around the country.
We saw lots of old friends from across the book industry, from publishers to booksellers. We had the chance to meet many new booksellers who were attending BEA for the first time because of the Chicago location. After the trade show floor closed, Binc staff and board members hosted a 20th anniversary “Drinks with Binc” party at Doc B’s. We had a great turn out with Binc fans filling the bar area. Though the party was LOUD, everyone had a fun time catching up with friends and colleagues from all facets of the book industry.
Party with a Purpose
After staying out way too late on Wednesday, Thursday brought another full day of meeting booksellers in the ABA lounge and on the floor at BEA. Penny attended a fantastic educational session on Facebook marketing from Cindy Ratzlaff who said if you only do one thing for social media this week, take a video of what you did at BEA!
The trade-show floor was hopping with tons of author signings and even a performance by Kenny Loggins that had everyone dancing.
After the show, the staff headed to the amazing Publishers Group West 40th anniversary party at the Double Door. Binc was again the designated charity for for this very popular party and attendees generously donated almost $1,300 to help booksellers. The great Mavis Staples and her band put on a tremendous show and had everyone cheering for more!
We can’t thank Elise Cannon, Leslie Jobson and all the folks at PGW enough for giving Binc this great opportunity to reach out to booksellers with our message of helping one another.
Farewell to BEA 2016
On the last day of BEA 2016, our volunteer extraordinaire, and Chicago Cubs super-fan, Jennifer Keeley joined us in the ABA Lounge to keep an eye on our table while the staff visited the floor and attended educational sessions, including one given by Anne Kubek on Five Questions Publishing Leaders Need to Ask about Metadata. Now we know what BISAC codes are and how they can drive sales for publishers.
We also got the opportunity to meet and take selfies with the friendliest person in the world, actress and author, Jamie Lee Curtis!
As the day wrapped up, and set-up for BookCon began, we were sad to see BEA 2016 end. We enjoyed seeing new faces, the convenience of the Windy City venue and the relaxed Midwestern pace was a welcome change from the frenzy of NYC. (Yes, our Midwest roots are showing!)
This year’s BEA in Chicago was a whirlwind of activity (pun intended) for the Binc staff and board members. It was great to see so many old friends and make many new connections. Thanks to all the booksellers, publishers, authors, volunteers and organizers for helping and supporting us at BEA each year! 2016 is a huge year for Binc, as we celebrate our 20th anniversary, and we’re excited to share our adventures with so many supportive book people.
See you next year in New York City!
