Kit enjoyed spending time with the booksellers from Mountains & Plains Independent Booksellers Association recently in Denver. It all began with a brief presentation at their annual membership meeting, letting the booksellers know that their support (financial and moral) is making a difference in the lives of their colleagues across the country. A hearty thank you to Laura Ayrey and her board of directors for allowing Binc this valuable platform.
We send a big thank you out to everyone who helped to promote Binc’s Campaign to Sustain during the month of May. The participation of so many book people is the reason that our first ever campaign to elicit sustaining donors was so successful. At the outset, we set ourselves a very lofty goal of doubling our sustaining donors and we nearly made it (just 1 short). Nevertheless, we consider the campaign to be a major success. The number of people across the book industry who added their support was phenomenal. We added 49 new sustaining donors and their contributions will ensure an additional $990 per month will be available to assist booksellers in need.
With support from donors, board members, industry partners and booksellers Binc accomplished much in 2014. Just how much? Check out this infographic to see Binc by the numbers in 2014. Thanks to everyone who makes our success possible!
2014 was another big and exciting year at Binc. We launched a video about how we helped a veteran bookseller keep his bookstores, we traveled across the country to attend the IBA meetings and meet more book people, and we expanded our scholarship program, awarding almost $200,000 to booksellers and their families to pursue their higher education goals.
While visiting family in West Virginia over the Thanksgiving holiday, we made our way to Shepherdstown, a small college town, and discovered Four Seasons Books. Of course we had to go into the bookshop and explore. As we were checking out I handed the clerk my business card and was about to explain about Binc, but didn’t get a single word out. The clerk saw the logo and jumped in with “I love what you do!” And then she went on to tell me all about our scholarship and emergency assistance programs. This was one of the best Thanksgiving moments I’ve ever had.
As we say goodbye to 2014, we also have to say goodbye to three exceptional Board members who have completed their terms. These three women have been instrumental in supporting the Binc Foundation from the beginning. Their involvement with attending events, recruiting volunteers, assisting with technical jobs, and helping to plan a sustainable future has greatly advanced the mission of the Foundation to assist booksellers in need. It is not an exaggeration to say that we would not be where we are today without their hard work. Please join us in recognizing their vision, celebrating their accomplishments and thanking them for their service to the board of directors.
Did you ever have one of those very ordinary encounters that snowballs into something much bigger? A casual comment, which grows to a longer conversation, leading to an introduction and all this is followed up with something really extraordinary. That is exactly the chain of events that led to Binc’s relationship with Eightfold Marketing & Creative.
As the fall and a new school year approach, we would like to take this opportunity to share some words of wisdom from our latest Binc scholarship winners. Each spring, after the Binc Scholarship Program ends and the awards have been announced, we at Binc have the distinct pleasure of receiving a pile of wonderful thank-you notes. We hear from high school seniors anxiously awaiting the start of their traditional college careers as well as from established booksellers juggling work, family along with their studies. Many of this year’s Binc scholars are well along in attaining their undergraduate or graduate degrees, while others are just beginning and a few have yet to decide the direction their studies will take. Whether they are freshmen or grad students, traditional or non-traditional students, from Vermont or California, they all have stories to tell and lessons to teach us. Here is some of what we have learned from the 2014-2015 class of Binc Scholars.

We are excited to be named a Top-Rated 2014 Nonprofit, and are proud of our accomplishments this year. The Foundation is helping an ever increasing number of booksellers through some very tough personal hardships. The recent addition of homelessness prevention and funeral expenses to the financial assistance program are helping Binc reach more booksellers in a real and meaningful way.
Dear Literati Customers,

Truth be known, you were doing much, much more. Because of Literati’s generous offer, half of your purchase was donated to the Book Industry Charitable (Binc) Foundation. The purchase you made will directly affect the life of a dedicated bookseller working in one of the country’s independent bookstores.
