The Binc Foundation would like to thank everyone who donated to our 2016 Campaign to Sustain in the month of May. With your help (all 32 of you!) we were able to raise funds that will be used to grant financial assistance to booksellers from across the country facing financial crisis.
The accomplishments of the Book Industry Charitable (Binc) Foundation are striking: since its creation in 1996, Binc has given more than $5.9 million in scholarships and financial assistance grants to more than 6,900 bookstore employees and their dependents. But this is only the start: the Foundation continues to grow, spreading the word about its generous and beneficial work and expanding fundraising to ensure a sustainable future. As it looks ahead, it’s also considering ways to help more people in the book industry.
The mission of the Book Industry Charitable Foundation is focused on being an organization that strengthens the bookselling community through financial assistance programs that help bookstore employees and their families in times of personal financial crisis. The Foundation has become a safety net for booksellers across the nation providing care in times of crisis.
We send a big thank you out to everyone who helped to promote Binc’s Campaign to Sustain during the month of May. The participation of so many book people is the reason that our first ever campaign to elicit sustaining donors was so successful. At the outset, we set ourselves a very lofty goal of doubling our sustaining donors and we nearly made it (just 1 short). Nevertheless, we consider the campaign to be a major success. The number of people across the book industry who added their support was phenomenal. We added 49 new sustaining donors and their contributions will ensure an additional $990 per month will be available to assist booksellers in need.
We hear many comments about what makes Binc special to booksellers. Here are a few of the comments we have gotten from grant recipients and from donors.
Grant recipients write:
“Astronomical medical bills took everything we had . . .We did everything we could to help ourselves, but after a time we simply couldn’t do it . . . Every single penny in savings and there was no end in sight . . . Binc was there when we needed it. I want to be there so that Binc can show the same compassion to others in need.”
