Frequently Asked Questions

How do I apply for assistance?

Fill out the inquiry form and a Binc staff member will be in touch.

Do I qualify for a grant?

To be eligible to apply for assistance, you must be an employee or owner of a bricks-and-mortar bookstore or comic book store with a minimum of 90 days of employment. Your household needs to have experienced an unforeseen financial hardship, or, in certain cases like natural disaster store assistance may be available.

Can you help me if I’m not a store owner?

Yes! Binc helps bookstore and comic store employees, not just store owners.

Can you help me with car repairs?

Binc is unable to pay directly for car repair or replacement. If paying for your car to be repaired leaves you unable to pay your rent and/or utilities, Binc may be able to pay those expenses on your behalf. If you can raise funds in your community (friends, family, etc.) Binc could match those funds up to $2,000 with a Matching Grant.

Does my bookstore have to be a member of Binc, the American Booksellers Association, or my regional trade association (NEIBA, MIBA, GLIBA, MPIBA, CALIBA, PNBA, NAIBA, SIBA)?

No, Binc is not a membership organization, we are a 501(c)(3) with the mission of helping any qualifying person working in bookstores and comic book stores.

How much does it cost to apply for a grant?

There is no cost to apply for a grant, and the awards are tax-free (with the exception of Matching Grants).  If you believe that your needs fit the scope and mission of the Binc Foundation, we encourage you to begin by filling out this form.

How long does it take for my grant status to be decided?

Our organization is lean and efficient! An answer to your request usually comes within a few business days. Once the application and requested documents have been submitted, payment will be made promptly, often within 48 hours.

Does the money need to be paid back?

All assistance and scholarships are grants, not loans. They are tax-free and never need to be paid back.

Where does the Foundation’s funding come from?

The Binc Foundation is funded through the generosity of all facets of the book and comic industry, from store employees, authors, publishers, distributors, and book agents. Binc holds a variety of fundraising events throughout the year and across the country. Additionally, donations are always welcome and accepted. Donate Today.

What can I do to help?

The Binc Foundation cannot help people in need without your help. There are a number of ways to help Binc, including direct donations, holding a fundraiser or helping to guide Binc by serving on a committee.
