On Saturday, May 2, 2015 the first national Independent Bookstore Day will be held. After the success of California Bookstore Day last year, the event is expanding to include more than 400 bookstores across the US with the support of the regional bookseller associations and the ABA.
The purpose of this national event is to celebrate local bookstores and the things only they can offer to the community. There will be author visits, food, drink, special merchandise, and lots of fun. Sixteen exclusive books and book related items will be offered including a Chris Ware print, a signed Margaret Atwood stencil, a literary map of the seas, a signed Captain Underpants print and much more.
Here is a sampling of some of the events planned around the country.
New York City
If you are in New York City #bookstoredaynyc will include over 20 bookstores celebrating IBD together. Special store events, author visits and an after party at the POWERHOUSE Arena are planned.
Malaprops Bookstore in Asheville, NC will host a Literary Trivia Challenge party featuring literary questions and categories. Plenty of food and music will be included in the fun.
California bookstores will keep the California Bookstore Day name but will be celebrating with the rest of the Indies across the country. Green Apple Books, the bookstore that started it all, will host events at both its Clement St. store and the 9th Ave. store. Events will include live music, free beer, and an author visit or two.
A dozen Indies in Chicago are teaming up to celebrate on May 2nd. Activities will include author visits, food, drink, and a specially created item composed of individual pages from an unreleased Stuart Dybek story, illustrated by Dmitry Samarov. Customers can collect and complete the story by traveling from store to store to gather the pages.
