Immediate and Post Disaster Assistance

A disaster may affect only a few individuals, such as a house or apartment fire, or an entire community, such as a flood, tornado, or hurricane.

Immediate Disaster Assistance

During an evacuation and for up to 72 hours after the disaster strikes.

Considered expenses include:

  • Transportation costs for mandatory evacuation.
  • Hotel expense assistance when free shelter or housing is not available through community or family resources.
  • Emergency food, water and medicine if not covered by community resources.

Event Documentation

  1. Red Cross intake form or FEMA evacuation notice, if applicable.
  2. Lodging quote or lodging expenses documentation

Post Disaster Assistance

Binc assistance focuses on meeting the post disaster needs of booksellers and their families, in situations where there is a financial need beyond the household’s means to pay.

Considered expenses include:

  • Essential bills that cannot be paid due to a loss of wages caused by a store closing following the disaster
  • Repairs to the employee’s home to make it habitable (if not covered by insurance or landlord)
  • Help with funds to relocate if home is destroyed

Event Documentation

  1. FEMA registration (if applicable)
  2. Insurance claim and quote for repairs to dwelling
  3. Documentation of lost wages via letter or contact information from the bookstore owner or manager

Disaster Assistance for Bookstores (Pilot Program)

Binc assistance is focused on keeping booksellers employed by helping the store return to normal operations as quickly as possible following a disaster.

Considered expenses include:

  • Essential bills that cannot be paid due to a store closing following the disaster
  • Repairs to the store to allow it to reopen (if not covered by insurance or landlord)
  • Replacement of damaged fixtures or equipment (not covered by insurance)
  • Storage of non-damaged equipment or furnishings while store is being repaired

Grants are not approved for:

  • Replacement of inventory, books or sidelines
  • Payments to publishers
  • Payroll expenses (Employees may apply individually)
