The Binc Foundation was established in 2011 with an expanded mission of helping bookstore employees across the country in situations of hardship. At that time, the Foundation’s Board of Directors and staff decided that three years would be enough time to determine if this newly formed Foundation could be made viable and continue to improve the lives of booksellers. In November of 2014 the Binc Foundation celebrated a successful three years of helping book store employees facing financial emergencies get back on their feet.
In 2014, on average Binc has received one grant request each week. Through the end of September, we have distributed a total of $67,800 in financial assistance to 36 families which is an increase of 53% over assistance granted in 2013. In addition, almost $200,000 in higher education scholarships was awarded to the book industry’s best and brightest students. Just over $20,000 in professional development scholarships helped booksellers attend industry events and continue their education.
Earlier this year a targeting marketing survey was distributed to all sectors of the bookselling industry. By analyzing the results of a this survey, listening to feedback, and tracking an increasing number of grant requests over the past three years, the board and staff of the Foundation have determined that there is a strong desire and need for an organization to provide a safety net when emergencies happen. Therefore, we have decided Binc will continue its mission to provide financial assistance to booksellers across the country.
With this determination comes an effort to continue to expand awareness through involvement and fundraising. In order for grant requests to continue to be met, the Foundation needs to become financially sustainable. To achieve this, we have launched our first major annual giving campaign, Book People Together. Our goal is to raise $5,000, and our board of directors will match up to $3,020 for a total of $8,020 to fund our financial assistance programs.
While we know this is just the beginning of creating a sustainable foundation, we also know how much difference an average grant of $1,800 can make to a bookseller facing a financial emergency. Our online donation page makes it easy to give a one-time donation or sign up to be a Sustaining Donor to give a monthly contribution. I hope you will help us exceed our 2014 campaign fundraising goal and make a donation today.
