Binc Welcomes New Board Members and Staff

Ann Arbor, MI – The Book Industry Charitable (Binc) Foundation is thrilled to announce updates to the Board’s Executive Committee, welcome new Board members, and introduce new staff members.

“I am thankful for all of the talented individuals on the Binc Board and staff who lend their expertise to make certain the Foundation is prepared and ready to help those in need,” said Binc executive director Pamela French.

Welcoming Our New Board Members

Steven Malk and Andy Perham have joined Binc’s Board of Directors.

Steven Malk

Steven Malk is a senior literary agent with Writers House where he represents a wide range of bestselling and award-winning authors and illustrators. He opened a West Coast office for Writers House in 1998 and his clients have won the Newbery Medal, the Caldecott Medal, Carnegie Medal, and the Kate Greenaway Medal. He’s the son and grandson of independent booksellers and worked at his parents’ bookstore, The White Rabbit, throughout high school and college. He’s on the board of the Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art.

Andy Perham

Andy Perham is the President and CEO of Books Inc. in the San Francisco Bay Area. Andy started at Books Inc. as a bookseller in 2010 and was first Store Manager then Director of Operations before serving as CEO in 2019. Books Inc. has nine neighborhood bookstores across the Bay Area, independently operates two airport bookstores in San Francisco International Airport under the name Compass Books, and also runs over 30 school book fairs per year. Andy has served on the Binc Finance Committee since 2016. He lives in Oakland, California.

Appreciation and Gratitude for Departing Board Members

The two departing Board members have a combined Board presence of 19 years.
Matthew Gildea is the recent Past-President of Binc’s Board of Directors and a longtime Board member. Christie Roehl most recently chaired the Program Committee after completing her term as Treasurer. Matthew and Christie provided valuable guidance as Binc’s mission and programs spread across the book and comic communities. Both served on the Executive Board and committees during their tenure as Board members.

“Christie and Matthew helped reimagine the Foundation as the organization that book and comic sellers can turn to in times of need. I can’t thank them enough for their leadership and forward thinking that helped create Binc.”, shared Pam French.

New Year and New Endeavors

Annie Philbrick, President of Binc’s Board of Directors, reflects, “As we enter a new year at Binc, I would like to thank the departing members of the board -Christie and Matthew, for their years of continued service and generosity. Along with Chris Morrow, who is now serving as Board Vice President, our two new members, Andy Perham and Steven Malk, come from backgrounds well entrenched in the bookselling community. We welcome their participation and expertise to our board as we approach this new year and endeavors at Binc.”

Binc Staff Member Updates

Ken White

Binc welcomes Ken White to the staff as program manager. Ken is no stranger to Binc: he has been a member of Binc’s Board of Directors since 2014 and most recently the Chair of the Program Committee. Ken brings his thirty-two years of publishing and bookselling experience to his new position at Binc. His experience on the Boards of the Northern California Independent Booksellers Association and the American Booksellers Association make him uniquely qualified to manage the underserved market pilot program.

Jane Regenstreif

Jane Regenstreif joined Binc in June 2022 as Office Coordinator but has been supporting Binc since the very beginning in 1996, both as a contributor and volunteer. Jane, a previous employee of Borders Books and Music’s HR and Store Operations teams, is excited to be back in closer touch with the book industry again. In addition to working at Binc, Jane also happily works at Zingerman’s Mail Order – so each week Jane gets to talk about great food, and also help Binc do good.

Judey Kalchik, previously Communication and Project Manager, is now Program Manager, as Kate Weiss is moving into a new Coordinator position. The Binc Development team includes Kathy Bartson, Director of Development, and Development Coordinator Jennifer Rojas.
